The ignition interlock device is specifically designed to prevent a driver from operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. After a DUI conviction, courts may mandate the installation of this device as a condition of regaining driving privileges. When a driver wishes to start the vehicle, they must blow into the device, which measures their blood alcohol concentration (BAC). If the BAC is above a preset limit, the vehicle will not start.

This type of device serves a dual purpose: it helps to ensure that convicted DUI offenders do not drive while impaired and acts as a deterrent for future violations. Other devices like a breathalyzer or alcohol detector might measure BAC, but they are not specifically designed as a built-in safety feature for vehicle operation and typically do not prevent or control driving access.
